Barry County Artists Exhibition

Each summer, the Thornapple Arts Council and Historic Charlton Park together host a juried exhibition of artwork from Barry County. The 2022 exhibition featured 19 pieces from 12 artists throughout Barry County and was on display from May 12th to July 17th.

First Place
Friendly Competition

Jana Thomas

Artist Statement

“I have painted since my teens using acrylics but switched to watercolor 20 years ago. I love its transparency, predictable unpredictability, and the many affects it generates. I do landscapes, portraits, still life, but most enjoy paintings that tell a story.”

Second Place
Birds of Prey

Lane Cooper

Artist Statement

“In 2003, I was in a serious car accident and sustained a closed head injury. I retired from Amway Corporation. Today I still suffer from headaches due to the accident; art is my best therapy. I love the idea of transforming trash into art as I look at my recycled collected “treasures.” The birds were created from fuel and oil filters. The stumps were created from exhaust pipes.”

Third Place

Jenill Wisteria

Jennie DeWitt

Peonies

Jennie DeWitt

Artist Statement

“Using the same methods as the old masters of glass, works of art are created that are pleasing to the eye yet serve a functional purpose or perhaps even the start of a family heirloom. I have studied the works of Tiffany and Handel and use those same methods on my creations. I strive for a different approach to light and color, in essence painting with glass.”

Honorable Mention

Curious About Bugs and Insects

Ronnie Woods

Dragonfly — Focus on Eyes

Ronnie Woods

Artist Statement

“I find beauty & inspiration in nature & the outdoors. Macro photography shows surprising views & intricate details that are often overlooked. You may think bugs/insects are creepy, but I think they’re cool, awesome, interesting creatures! Photographer-artist. Previous exhibits: ArtPrize/Grand Rapids, Art Center of Battle Creek, Artworks/Big Rapids, Hastings, Delton, festivals in Remus & Edmore.”

Honorable Mention
Driven By Symmetry

Karen Culver

Artist Statement

“There is calmness to symmetry. I started this piece with the large, featured leaves. I used extracts from my garden photos as well as other digital elements to create the symmetry. I thoughtfully added texture and shading; changed colors, blend modes, and opacities; and then rearranged and adjusted until I was able to create the balance in shape and color I envisioned.”

Lightning over the Hickory Corners Cemetery

Jeff Baurs

“I’m Jeff Baurs and I like to chase and take pictures of natural phenomenon. These pictures are printed on 16×24 inch metal. The first photo was taken on the south end of Gun Lake in Orangeville in Barry County. The second was taken at the Hickory Corners Cemetery in Barry County.”

River

Eloise Berry

Artist Statement

“This painting is of a river in Colorado where you find elk, buffalo, and mountain lions roaming all around you.”

Indian Arrow Heads 1

George Clouse

Indian Arrow Heads 2

George Clouse

Artist Statement

“I’m retired and dabble in various hobbies. This artwork is made from Plaster of Paris and hand painted.”

Lena — Rescue, Therapy, Service Dog

Annette Freid

Spring at Cedar Creek Institute I

Annette Freid

Artist Statement

“I have been painting with watercolors since January 2020. I’m submitting two pieces this year which I have drawn and painted based upon personal photographs. Lena is based upon reference photographs of a beloved companion dog and is painted using gouache. I chose the landscape because of the beautiful contrast of white on green.”

Friendly Village

Katie Morris

Oh Happy Day (An Amish Scene)

Katie Morris

Artist Statement

“I have been painting since a young age (60 years). I am a self-taught artist, though I have participated in many art workshops and seminars. I am a member of BCSA (Battle Creek Society of Artists). I enjoy painting wildlife, nature, sunsets, reflections on water, and capturing simple moments in people’s lives.”

Imprint

Lauren Tripp

Artist Statement

“Lauren Tripp always practiced art in one form or another. She attended Art school at Western Michigan University and concentrated in jewelry, metalsmithing, and sculpture. She graduated with a BA of Arts in 2004. She now still resides in Michigan where she not only creates jewelry, but also gets to teach others to create and love it too at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Kirk Newman Art School.”

Pilot

Audre Wieringa

Soldier

Audre Wieringa

Artist Statement

“I love to make my own original characters for fun, inspired by the things around me like animals and colors. I create backstories and names for them. I use alcohol markers for color and black fine liners to outline. One of my favorite parts of making different characters is designing the clothes and jewelry. I also love incorporating different types of animals into my characters.”
